COPE is the Coalition On Political Education. This is a voluntary program that allows you to donate money each week from your paycheck to fight for worker friendly legislation & against possible laws that are anti-worker & anti-union.

Your participation as a laborer in the United States can have a great impact on existing laws, such as ensuring the continuation of FMLA and the 40-hour workweek.

These funds have also been used to successfully defeat bills that would allow corporations to give you compensatory time off vs. paying you the federally mandated time & a half for anything worked over 40 hours. This bill has been called the "working family flexibility act" because it would allow you additional time with your family. The fact of the matter is that companies could mandate overtime and when it comes to getting your time off, it would not be available when you need it, it would be granted per "needs of the business". How many times do we hear that phrase?

Please help us help ourselves. Fill out the attached COPE form and return it to your department steward. The donation is deducted from your paycheck weekly, and is not retroactive. The earliest that it would hit payroll is June 1st. Donations are deducted in $0.25 increments with $0.25 being the minimum deduction, which only amounts to $13.00 per year. How frequently do we spend more money than that each year on less important things? Please give more if you can. We know you care about our future.
